Collaboration for Employment and Education Synergy (CEES)  is a high school transition program at the University of Cincinnati that helps students with intellectual and developmental disabilities ages 14–22 with IEPs, discover their strengths and prepare for the future. Through a 12-week individualized curriculum, students build workplace skills, gain independence, and explore how their interests can be applied in real-world careers.

Pre-Apprenticeship Pathways

The CEES Pre-Apprenticeship Pathways offers high school aged students a structured, semester-based experience designed to build skills through hands-on, real-world learning. Participants engage on the University of Cincinnati's campus one day per week while following the University of Cincinnati academic calendar.

These pre-apprecenticship pathways are ideal for high school students seeking meaningful exposure opportunities in a supportive university setting.

Program Schedule & Commitment

Students may enroll for either the Fall or Spring semester. Program requirements include:

  • Participation one day per week

  • 12-week commitment per semester

  • Adherence to the University of Cincinnati academic calendar 

Application Deadlines

  • Fall Semester - Applications are due by August 20.
  • Spring Semester - Applications are due by January 1.
  • Applicants must apply in advance for the semester they wish to attend. Space is limited, and early applications are encouraged.

An engineering pre-apprenticeship offers hands-on training in engineering basics, problem-solving, and technical skills for apprenticeships or entry-level roles in mechanical, electrical, civil, or software engineering.

SOLIDWORKS - A SOLIDWORKS Certification is an industry-recognized credential that demonstrates proficiency in using SOLIDWORKS, a leading computer-aided design (CAD) software used for 3D modeling, engineering design, and product development. These certifications help validate technical skills in mechanical design, simulation, and manufacturing processes.

A hospitality pre-apprenticeship provides foundational training in customer service, food handling, housekeeping, and event planning, to prepare participants for entry-level roles or apprenticeships in hotels, restaurants, and tourism through a mix of classroom learning and hands-on experience.

IT pre-apprenticeship provides foundational technical and workplace skills essential for careers in digital literacy, IT support, cybersecurity, software development, and networking. These programs equip participants with the knowledge and experience needed to pursue entry-level positions or advance into full apprenticeships in the technology field.

Individual Programming

CEES Individual Programming offers individualized comprehensive transition services for high school students with disabilities, with an IEP, providing a tailored approach to enhance academic, social, and vocational skills. Through a combination of classroom instruction, campus engagement, and community partnerships, students receive support in navigating post-secondary education and career pathways. These services are designed to foster independence, self-advocacy, and readiness for future employment or continued education, ensuring each student’s unique needs and goals are met.

Build It. Try It. Discover STEM

CEES STEM Access for ALL is a community-integrated summer camp designed for high school students with IEPs, ages 14–22. Over six weeks, students build foundational skills for future STEM career pathways through hands-on internships, social skill development, and individualized goal setting. Programming takes place on the University of Cincinnati campus, where students are supported by trained “near-peer” staff who foster independence, confidence, and real-world readiness in a supportive college environment.

Learning Activities

During STEM Summer Camp, students will practice real lab technician skills through hands-on, engaging activities like:

  • Dress Like a Scientist
    Learn how and when to wear gloves, goggles, and lab coats to stay safe—just like real lab techs.
  • Clean & Safe Science
    Practice cleaning workspaces, washing hands correctly, and keeping lab areas organized and germ-free.
  • Meet the Tools of the Lab
    Identify and safely use common lab equipment through guided, hands-on exploration.
  • Sample Sorting & Handling
    Practice handling “samples” (using safe materials) and learning how to move, store, and track them carefully.
  • Science Documentation Station
    Learn how to label items, follow simple checklists, and record steps—just like lab documentation.
  • Follow the Steps
    Use visual schedules and task cards to complete lab tasks in the correct order
  • Problem-Solving in the Lab
    Learn what to do when something goes wrong (spills, missing tools, mistakes) in a safe, supported way.
  • Explore Real Lab Careers
    Learn how lab skills are used in hospitals, research labs, and science jobs through videos, tours, and guest speakers.
  • Build Confidence Through Practice
    Try lab skills multiple times in a fun, low-pressure environment to build independence and confidence.
