Masters Degree + Licensure in Secondary Education

About

The CI masters degree plus licensure in secondary education, allows qualified candidates to complete the requirements for an Ohio Adolescent and Young Adult (Secondary Education) teaching license while simultaneously completing the requirements of the CI masters degree. UC’s Secondary masters plus licensure prepares teachers in the following areas:

  • Integrated ELA – this allows you to teach any ELA classes offered in grades 7 – 12 in Ohio schools such as, communications, speech, specialized literature, or creative writing classes.
  •  Integrated Mathematics – this allows you to teach any math classes taught in grades 7 – 12 in Ohio schools, such as pre-algebra, algebra, geometry, statistics, consumer math, or calculus classes.
  • Integrated Social Studies – this allows you to teach a range of history and social sciences classes offered in grades 7 – 12 in Ohio Schools, such as junior high social studies, American history, world history, government, sociology, psychology, or political science courses

In the sciences, you have 4 licensing options:

  • Single subject physics – this allows you to teach general science grades 7 & 8; or high school physical science, astronomy, or physics classes, including AP with appropriate training.
  • Single subject chemistry - this allows you to teach general science grades 7 & 8; or physical science and chemistry classes, including AP with appropriate training.
  • Single subject life sciences - this allows you to teach general science grades 7 & 8; or physical science, biology classes, environmental science including AP with appropriate training.
  • Integrated Science - this allows you to teach ANY science classes taught in grades 7 – 12 in Ohio schools, including AP with appropriate training

The license you select is dependent upon the disciplinary content you completed in your undergraduate degree. You must have approximately 75% of the disciplinary content course work completed in order to beginning the licensure program. A transcript review should be completed prior to applying.

The teacher licensure program is a cohort-based program with the first clinical experience starting in the Spring semester. That is followed by a year-long (fall, spring) clinical teaching experience which includes student teaching. In the semesters which include clinical experiences, you must be able to travel to your placement school and UC campus for courses. Other masters degree courses can be taken in fall semester or summer semester to complete the requirements of the masters degree. You do not have to complete your masters degree at the same time as you complete the requirements for your teaching license.
