Secondary Education + Licensure

Master's Degree

Candidates may link the Master of Education in Curriculum and Instruction (Secondary Education) with initial teacher licensure. Candidates first qualify for an initial State of Ohio teaching license, either an Adolescence to Young Adult (grades 7 to 12) license in science, social studies, mathematics or English/language arts or a Multiage (grades pre-K to 12) license in Spanish, French, German or Latin. Upon completion of the licensure phase of the program, students complete the remaining requirements for the M. Ed. degree. The licensing portion takes of four quarters of full time study to complete however, some of the licensure coursework applies to meeting M. Ed. degree requirements. Once a candidate obtains his/her teaching license he/she can continue with full time study in the M.Ed. or work complete the remaining courses during summers or as an ongoing part of his/her professional development.

The master's degree curriculum consists of a core of required courses, with variations permitted within required categories in accordance with the candidate's teaching field and professional interests. This M. Ed. + licensure program seeks to improve the quality of teaching in secondary schools by preparing well-qualified candidates for positions in secondary schools in diverse communities. Candidates identify, disseminate, and develop a commitment to the use of professional knowledge based on grounded research and established practice. They cultivate inquiry and reflective practice, and foster a commitment to collaboration and life-long learning.

Financial Aid

There are some partial graduate tuition scholarships (University Graduate Scholarships) available every year. These are available on the basis of previous academic record. It is important to apply each academic year to obtain this scholarship. Summer quarter requires a separate application.
