Academic Program

Middle Childhood Education + Licensure

Master's Degree

Students with a bachelor's degree may apply for admission to a joint program which includes both an INITIAL Ohio Middle Childhood teaching license (grades 4-9) and an M.Ed. (Curriculum & Instruction) degree. Since the Master of Education degree without the license would be of little use for securing a full-time teaching position, this program is designed so that students would obtain a teaching license first, followed by courses designed for the master's degree. There are many courses that are common to the two programs and can be used to satisfy the requirements for both. The licensure program requires approximately two years for most students and the master's degree is commonly completed in one to three quarters after obtaining the license. The time it takes to complete the master's degree depends on the number of courses taken each quarter. This two step process is beneficial in seeking a teaching position as well as gaining the maximum benefit from a master's degree.

Admission Requirements

  1. For admission in the program, candidates must have obtained the minimum 2.80 GPA at the undergraduate level. Candidates must also score a 950 or higher on the GRE exam and have scores sent to UC by the deadlines listed for each quarter. (Autumn - September 1)
  2. Students should review all materials in this packet and then call the Division of Teacher Education (556-3600) to schedule an appointment with a Middle Childhood advisor. This preliminary meeting is important to answer any questions you may have about the program and to determine which concentration courses still need to be taken. Unofficial transcripts of all previous coursework should be brought to this meeting to aid in the development of a quarter by quarter plan of study.
  3. Students wishing to apply to the Master of Education with Initial Middle Childhood Licensure may obtain an admission packet by calling the department at 556-3600 or stopping by the Division's Main Office on West Campus. This packet contains information about the admission procedures as well as financial aid.Students who plan to start the Cohort part of the program in the coming Autumn quarter need to fill out a Teaching Associate Cohort application form no later than September 1st. This form can be obtained from Middle Childhood Advisor or Division of Teacher Education at 556-3600. Please note that in order to start the Cohort program, the student must have at most only 3-5 courses left to take.
  4. Teaching Associates who plan to start the Internship part of the program in the coming Autumn quarter need to fill out an Internship application by February 15th of the Teaching Associate Cohort year. Admission to the Internship is not automatic, and interns are interviewed by the school in which internship is requested. The administration of the prospective school, as well as the Middle Childhood faculty at UC, make the final decision on internship placements.
  5. Students should plan on full-time study during both the Teaching Associate Cohort and Internship years. Professional education courses and content area courses required for licensure must be finished first before spending time on courses that apply exclusively towards the master's degree.
