Master's Degree

The master's degree program in literacy enables professional educators to broaden their understanding of the social, cultural and language factors that contribute to a person's ability to read and write in a first or second language. Experience in assessment and evaluation of reading and writing difficulties and critical analysis of classical and current research in literacy are stressed.

The Graduate Program in Pre-K-16 Literacy at the University of Cincinnati offers comprehensive and in-depth programs of study for candidates interested in exploring reading and writing as language processes. The development of literate behaviors is viewed as an inherent component of language learning in general, including second language acquisition. Candidates in the program will be encouraged to view their specializations within the broader contexts of literacy, culture, and schooling.

The Program of Study

The State of Ohio's Reading Endorsement is included in the Masters Degree program in Literacy. The Reading Endorsement is added to a teacher's current teaching certificate or license. Students must have a valid teaching certificate or license to be eligible for the Reading Endorsement. To earn the Reading Endorsement, students must be admitted into the M.Ed. in Literacy or another masters degree program at the University of Cincinnati. Students may take up to three courses before being admitted into the degree program.

When students have completed the coursework for the Reading Endorsement, they are eligible to take the Praxis II National Teachers Examination Test: Introduction to the Teaching of Reading, Test # 0200. A passing score of 540 or higher on this test is required by the State of Ohio to earn the Reading Endorsement. The endorsement is added the student's current teaching certificate or license. Applications and information can be found online at www.ets.org/praxis. If you are not a certified or licensed teacher, you are not eligible to take the exam or apply for the Reading Endorsement, although you may complete the coursework.
