Academic Program
Literacy, Reading Endorsement
Professional Development
The Reading Endorsement from the Ohio Department of Education ensures that schools have access to licensed teachers with the knowledge and skills to support students at differing stages of literacy development and from differing cultural and linguistic backgrounds. UC offers the coursework aligned with the endorsement's standards. Teachers enrolled in UC's coursework will be prepared to use a wide variety of assessment tools and practices to plan and evaluate effective reading instruction and to offer key strategies to create a literate environment that fosters reading and writing. The program is designed to address the social, cultural and linguistic factors that contribute to a student's reading and writing development. In addition to meeting the requirements for ODE's endorsement, it meets NCATE standards for specialization in reading.
Enrolled teachers may complete the sequence of courses in 4- 5 quarters, which includes hands-on practicum experiences at convenient sites. Each course has many opportunities to incorporate teaching interests and context into projects and assignments.
Enrolled teachers are eligible for the Professional Development tuition rate of 50% of in-state full graduate tuition. All classes for the Reading Endorsement may be applied to the PreK-16 Reading Instruction Focus of the Master's Degree in Literacy. Please note, students seeking the MEd should be admitted into the master's program before completing more than 15 credit hours of endorsement coursework. The Literacy Program also offers a doctoral program in PreK-16 Literacy Instruction.
