Athletic Training
Bachelor of Science Degree
Athletic training is a profession that is practiced by athletic trainers, health care professionals who collaborate with physicians to optimize activity and participation of patients and clients.
Athletic training encompasses the prevention, diagnosis and intervention of emergency, acute and chronic medical conditions involving impairment, functional limitations and disabilities.
Athletic trainers treat a broad population, from the amateur and professional athlete to the typical patient in need of orthopedic rehabilitative care. Typical client groups include recreational, amateur, and professional athletes, individuals who have suffered musculoskeletal injuries, those seeking strength, conditioning, fitness and performance enhancement, and others designated by the physician.
Freshman Admission Requirements
All incoming freshmen entering in the 2010-2011 academic year must meet one of the following requirements:
- Graduate in the top 10% of their high school class with a 2.7 high school GPA and test score of 17 ACT or 820 SAT
- Score 22 ACT or 1020 SAT with a 2.7 high school GPA
- Graduate in the top 60% of their high school class with a 2.7 high school GPA and test score of 21 ACT or 980 SAT
- Additionally, incoming freshmen must have all high school articulation requirements including:
- College preparatory English (4 units)
- College preparatory math (3 units)
- Science (2 units)
- Social studies (2 units)
- Foreign language (2 units same language)
- Fine arts (1 unit)
- Additional units from above (2 units)
Transfer Admission Requirements
All transfer students must have completed the high school course requirements listed above.
A 2.5* grade point average is required for the first tier admission into the undergraduate athletic training program
A student must have a 2.75 GPA for admission and retention in the professional phase of the athletic training program
A grade of "B-" or better is required for all core athletic training courses and a grade of "C-" or better is required for all health promotion and education courses.
All coursework and clinical education requirements must be completed prior to enrolling in the internship unless permission is obtained from the Director, Athletic Training Program and the Internship Coordinator.

Majoring Details
Entry-Level athletic training education uses a competency-based approach in both the classroom and clinical settings. Using a medical-based education model, athletic training students are educated to serve in the role of the physician extenders, with an emphasis on clinical reasoning skills. Educational content is based on cognitive (knowledge), psychomotor (skill), affective competencies (professional behaviors), and clinical proficiencies (professional, practice oriented outcomes).

Students are required to complete general education courses in English, math, humanities, social science, diversity, natural sciences, literature, social ethical issues, and history. A majority of the general education requirements are incorporated in the athletic training and health education courses.

Graduation Requirements
In order to graduate from the College of Education, Criminal Justice, and Human Services, a student must:
- Complete all required course work and program requirements
- Attain a grade of C- or better for all athletic training courses
- Attain at least a 2.75 grade point average
- Be in good academic standing; that is, not on academic or disciplinary probation or suspension
- Meet the college's residency requirement of 45 credit hours
- File formal application for the degree by the posted quarter of graduation deadline
