First established in 1970, the School of Criminal Justice is ranked among the top programs in the country. The stated mission of the School is Excellence in Research, Teaching and Service, and through our 20 full-time faculty members and 11 staff we serve more than 1,500 undergraduate and graduate students.

The School has been ranked #1 in research, and supports these and related activities through the Center for Criminal Justice Research, which includes the Corrections Institute and the Policing Institute. Graduate students are provided opportunities to learn and conduct research, training, and technical assistance in a wide range of criminal justice settings.

CJ Doctoral Program Rated #1
UC Ranked Number One Nationally in Criminal Justice Research
Along with a string of recognition and honors that establish the School of Criminal Justice at the University of Cincinnati as one of the nation’s foremost programs of its kind, add one more – the leading criminal justice department in the nation in research productivity.  That was the outcome documented in a recent edition of the “Journal of Criminal Justice Education,” which included an article by researchers from Florida State University analyzing faculty productivity in the field.  Article by Carey Hoffman.

Ph.D. Program Ranked Number Three Nationally
A recent article in US News and World Report ranking America’s best graduate schools, ranked our Ph.D. program third nationally. We are proud of this ranking and honored to have our program held in such high regard.

20 Year Anniversary of the Ph.D. Program
The School of Criminal Justice celebrated the 20th anniversary of its doctoral program by sponsoring various events for their alumni, faculty, and current doctoral students in May, 2011.

FACULTY

Dr. Bonnie Fisher, will be awarded the George Rieveschl Jr. Award for Creative and/or Scholarly Works by UC’s Office of the President and the Faculty Senate, while honoring their distinguished winners at the All-University Faculty Awards Celebration on Thursday, May 17, 2012.

Dr. Bonnie Fisher is the recipient of the 2011 Outstanding Faculty Achievement  Award from UC’s School of Criminal Justice.   Bonnie had a stellar year including publication of numerous articles, a new book (that also received an outstanding book award), and a grant (with Dr. Scott Jacques) awarded from P&G.     6/11

Dr. Pat Van Voorhis has been named as the recipient of the August Vollmer Award byt the American Society of Criminology.  She will receive the award at the ASC Conference in Washington, D.C. in November 2011.  The August Vollmer Award (established in 1959) recognizes a criminologist whose research scholarship has contributed to justice or to the treatment or prevention of criminal or delinquent behavior, either through a single outstanding work, a series of theoretical or research contributions, or on the accumulated contributions by a senior scholar.

The University of Cincinnati was recognized as a Top Cited Institution for 2001-2010 in the March 2011 issue of Justice Quarterly.

Drs. Frank Cullen, Robin Engel, and Bonnie Fisher were recognized as Top Cited Authors for 2001-2010 in the March 2011 issue of Justice Quarterly. 

Dr. John Wright was recognized for having a Top Cited Article for 2007-2010 in the March 2011 issue of Justice Quarterly: Wright, J; Beaver, K; Delisi, M; et al., Evidence of negligible parenting influences on self-control, delinquent peers, and delinquency in a sample of twins, Vol. 25(3) 544-569.

Dr. Frank Cullen, Distinguished Research Professor, has been named recipient of the Edwin H. Sutherland Award by the American Society of Criminology for his contributions to theory and ressearch in the field of criminology.  He was presented with the award at the ASC Conference in San Francisco, November 2010.

Dr. Ed Latessa, Professor and Director, has been named recipient of the “Maude Booth Correctional Award” from the American Correctional Association for his contributions to the field of corrections. He was presented with the award in Chicago, IL, August 2010.

Dr. Ed Latessa, Professor and Director, is the recipient of the 2010 Outstanding Community Partner Award for his exceptional work,  continued assistance with Research and Development’s program evaluations, and his expertise in using evidence-based knowledge to improve correctional program effectiveness.  The award was presented in October 2010 at their Honors Ceremony by the Arizona Dept. of Juvenile Corrections,  Research & Development.

Dr. Ed Latessa is  the recipient of the “Community Hero Award” from the Community Resources for Justice for his accomplishments and contributions to community corrections. He received this in Boston, April 2010.

Dr. Ed Latessa is the recipient of the 2010 “Bruce Smith Award” from the Academy of Criminal Justice Sciences for his many contributions to the field of corrections. He received this at the annual ACJS conference in San Diego, February 2010.

Dr. Frank Cullen, Distinguished Research Professor, is the recipient of the “Donal A. J. MacNamara Award” from the Academy of Criminal Justice Sciences for the outstanding publication, “Racial Discrimination and Hirschi’s Criminological Classic: A Chapter in the Sociology of Knowledge,” which appeared in the September 2009 issue of Justice Quarterly. The Awards Committee “determined that the article was well written, highly relevant, and important to our discipline.”  The award was presented at the ACJS conference in San Diego, February 2010.

Dr. Frank Cullen, Distinguished Research Professor, is the recipient of the “Edwin H. He was presented with this award at the ASC meeting in San Francisco, November 2010.

Dr. James Frank, Professor, has been selected as the recipient of the “President’s Award” from the Western Society of Criminology for contributions to the field of Criminology and positive influence on the current president’s career. He received this at their annual conference in Feb. 2010.
